Next Steps into Adolescence - Virtual

Thursday, October 27th, 2022 1:00pm - 3:30pm

This virtual workshop is geared toward parents, caregivers and professionals supporting individuals on the autism spectrum who are between the ages 9-15. As children approach and enter the teenage years, they must deal with physical growth spurts, mindboggling hormone releases, and ever-changing and challenging social relationships. For pre-adolescent children with autism, these already complicated physical and social changes may be compounded by the difficulties of reading social cues and understanding the behaviors of others. We will hear from a psychologist, developmental pediatrician and several parents who have successfully navigated this phase with their own children.

Parents/caregivers are also welcome to attend. Topics include an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder, how diagnoses are made, available therapies and treatments, tips and resources for supporting families living with ASD and a question and answer panel. Presenters will include specialists in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work and psychology.

Making the transition from adolescence to adulthood is a complex time in any young person's life. However, it's not uncommon for this stage to pose a greater challenge for those in the autism community as they navigate sudden changes in services and make life-altering decisions about their future.
